This same sampling design can be used for other sampling needs, such as randomly identifying reaches or streams or sites to conduct water quality, water temperature, habitat attribute survey, or redd surveys. Penobscot Watershed Survey Design Description of Sample Design for Panel Design Target population: All perennial streams/rivers in the Penobscot basin, with the exception of the West Branch Penobscot and Webster Brook, which are both inaccessible to Atlantic salmon. Sample Frame: GIS stream network coverage from NHD High resolution dataset developed by USGS. In addition, Atlantic salmon habitat modeled data based on NHD High was used for attribute data. Survey Design: A Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) survey design for a linear stream resource was used. The GRTS design includes reverse hierarchical ordering of the selected sites. Multi-density categories: Estimated stream widths based on hydrologic curves: 0-12, 12-24, and >24 m. Stratification: Stratify by Dam Reaches- portions of the basin sharing the same damrelated mortality for migrating smolts and adult Atlantic salmon. Panels: Three panels. Year_1 sites will be visited in year 1 and then year 4, year 7, etc. Year_2 sites will be visited in year 2, year 5, year 8, etc. Year_3 sites will be visited in year 3, year 6, year 9, etc. Year_Every sites will be visited every year. Expected sample size: Ten sites per strata annually with an additional 10 rotating sites for a total of 20 annually per strata. Sampling distributed across stream width classes as "0-12"=15, "12-24"=15, ">24"=10. Oversample: 80 sites Site Use: The base design has 20 sites per stratum per year. Sites are listed in SiteID order and must be used in that order. All sites that occur prior to the last site used must have been evaluated for use and then either sampled or reason documented why that site was not used. As an example, if 30 sites are to be sampled in the stratum, then the first 30 sites in SiteID order would be used. Sample Frame Summary The total stream length (km) is 9976.5296 km.
