Maine Case Studies Northern Pike in Long Pond: While the impact of northern pike on salmon populations in Maine has not been studied in detail, there is strong circumstantial evidence that they are major predators on salmon of all sizes in some lakes. Long Pond in Kennebec County was traditionally a principal fishery for quality sized landlocked salmon with the fishery maintained by stocking of hatchery fish. Northern pike were first confirmed in Long Pond in 1980, and presumed to have gotten there either through natural dispersal from connected water bodies previously introduced with pike, or through an illegal introduction directly into the lake. Lucas (MDIFW, unpublished data) showed increasing evidence of scarring (presumed to be the result of attacks by pike) observed on adult salmon at Long Pond in the Belgrade Lakes Region was correlated with declining fall trap net catches of salmon (Figure 1). This abrupt decline may be associated with the failure of the forage base possibly from several failed or weak smelt recruitment years. Trends based on poor smelt year class have been shown on Moosehead Lake with land locked salmon and lake trout. Northern pike may have contributed to weakening the year class, however forage base is often very large and subject to stochastic events that can produce very large annual fluctuations. In recent years stocking of spring yearling salmon has been suspended at Long Pond in favor of stocking larger fall yearling sized salmon in an effort to reduce pike predation. Pike have also been observed in the small tributaries to Long Pond, and where they are present are believed to have impacted native brook trout populations in the tributaries (Scott Davis MDIFW, personal communication; see Stony Brook scetion). Limited food habits data are available from Maine. At Long Pond, pike fed primarily on smelts. Thirty-seven pike stomachs were examined in the winters of 1994 and 1995. Eleven (50%) of the 22 stomachs that contained food items contained smelts. In other pike waters in Maine, where there are few if any salmonids present, white perch are heavily utilized as forage by northern pike. PRFP Page 215
