Transect W-1 was located at this constriction, and was configured to transect both the connection channel and also Wangan Brook above the confluence (Figure A-1). Upstream passage for adult or juvenile northern pike would be restricted under these flow conditions; however, the bankfull elevation indicates that under peak spring run-off conditions, this riffle would be submerged (Figure A-2). Given the relatively low gradient of this reach, it is unlikely that velocities at peak run-off would be limiting for upstream movements, in which case, this would cease to be an upstream barrier under such conditions. If northern pike were to ascend the channel further, they would next encounter a short segment of shallow, braided channels (which at higher flows would likely be passable) before encountering a largely intact, j-shaped abandoned beaver dam approximately 200 ft in length (Photos A-3 and –A-4, Figure A-1). Although the northern end of the beaver dam was breached, under the observed conditions water was exiting the beaver flowage via leakage rather than through the breach directly to a channel. During the second site visit, water depth had increased by approximately one foot, but water still was exiting via leakage. Under these conditions the beaver dam creates an impassable upstream passage barrier. Transect W-2 depicts crest and toe elevations along the axis of the dam, and also the elevation of spring high water elevation of the channel immediately below the beaver dam (Figure A-3). Under spring conditions it does appear that the channel below the dam can backwater to an elevation greater than the breach invert, which could briefly facilitate upstream fish movement, particularly if the beaver pond water elevation was high, which is probable during spring run-off. Given the ephemeral nature of beaver dams, it is also possible that the shape, size of the dam and invert elevation of breaches can change from year to year, so that the observed passage conditions can potentially change from year to year.
