Therefore, natural falls and dams where temporary velocity or jump barriers could be
created were identified (Figure 14 and Table 10). These barriers would be
considered emergency measures but not permanent solutions, as they would allow
passage of Atlantic salmon grilse and adults but will severely hinder the passage of
most native species including anadromous alosids (river herring and American shad)
and as such should considered a short term solution. The adverse impact on
anadromous alosids would be minimal in the short term since very few adult alosids
are currently present below these projects.
Three main stem dams, Brown's Mill (Dover-Foxcroft Lower), Moosehead
Manufacturing (Dover-Foxcroft Upper), and Guilford (Interface), exist. All three have
vertical slot fishways. Only Brown’s Mill has both upstream and downstream
passage, although all three have upstream passage. The two dams in Dover-
Foxcroft are hydro-electric facilities. There are also two dams in the Sebec drainage
(Milo and Sebec) that currently have no provisions for passage. The dam at
Schoodic Lake has a 6’ dam with three gates – but at high water it may be passable
and West Seboeis Lake dam is impassible.
There are also several natural barriers in the drainage. These include a series of
falls around Gulf Hagas on the West Branch Pleasant, Gauntlet and Mud Gauntlet
Falls on the East Branch Pleasant, two sets of mapped falls on Ship Pond Stream
