Concentrating fry stocking in stream 4 to 12 m in width should yield greater numbers of parr than stocking other size streams. This exercise resulted in 57,095 units of optimal fry stock habitat (segments >50% rearing habitat), or the requirement of over 5 million fry to seed the habitat at 100 fry/unit. In addition, there were another 22,961 units in segments with less than 50 % habitat, for a total of 80,056 units. With the Penobscot fry production currently around one million, management decisions will be required as to where to stock fry. More detailed optimizations could be carried out to address specific management concerns. In addition, juvenile population assessment data may reveal stream reaches larger than 12 m in width that outperform expectations and should be considered for stocking. However, this should be done so based on data, and lacking such information, using the 4 to 12 m width recommendation is a sound first step.
