to identify and prioritize stream connectivity limitations for alewife and American eel.
20.3.2 Undertake Stream Connectivity Improvements for Juvenile and Adult
Alewife and American Eel
Once tasks 20.1.3, 20.1.4, 20.2.1, 20.2.2, and 20.3.1 are completed, resources can
be allocated and stream connectivity problems for juvenile and adult alewife and
American eel remediated.
21.1.1 Develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MDIFW for
Selectively Removing Non-Native/Undesirable Fish Species at Fishway
Passage Trapping Locations Prior to Removal of the Veazie and Great Works
Dams
An MOU between MDIFW and MDMR is needed to identify which non-native and
undesirable fish species are to be removed from the Penobscot River at the Veazie
and Mattaceunk fishway traps. If traps are installed at other fishways, then MOUs
need to be developed for these trappings locations.
21.1.2 Develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MDIFW for
Selectively Removing Non-Native/Undesirable Fish Species at the Milford Fish
Lift Sorting Facility (Post Veazie and Great Works Dam Removals)
An MOU between MDIFW and MDMR is needed to identify which non-native and
undesirable fish species are to be removed from the Penobscot River at the Milford
fish lift sorting facility after the Veazie and Great Works dams are removed.
Specifics will be outlined in the Milford Fish Lift Operating Protocols developed in
Task 19.1.6.
21.1.3 Establish List of Non-Native/Undesirable Fish Species and Protocols for
Removing or Allowing Passage at Fish Passage Facility Trapping Locations
Non-native and undesirable fish species can be trapped at fishway traps as part of
fish enumeration and brood stock collection operations. To prevent unintentional
range expansion of non-native and undesirable fish species located downstream of
fishway traps but not upstream, a list of fish species to be removed and protocols for
removal will be established. For non-native and undesirable fish species already
present upstream of trapping locations, protocols for removing or allowing passage
will be established.
21.1.4 Undertake with Other Resource Agencies Risk Assessments of Range
Expansion for Non-Native/Undesirable Fish Species
Installing and/or operating fish passage facilities without appropriate controls can
increase range expansion of non-native/undesirable fish species. This task is a
placeholder within the Passage and Connectivity section. See Section 4 “Non-
Native Species Including Northern Pike”, Tasks 23.1.2 and 23.1.3 for specific
deliverables.
