Northern Pike in Rome Trout Brook: Rome Trout Brook is a monitoring site in
MDIFW’s stream brook trout monitoring project and is a tributary to Great Pond in
Belgrade. Brook trout monitoring sites are representative of ‘good’ trout habitat,
randomly distributed throughout Maine, and are annually monitored with intensive
fish species and aquatic habitat data collection protocols. Complete fish species
composition, species relative abundance, and brook trout population estimates by
size class have been annually determined since 1993 with multi-pass electrofishing
techniques. The monitoring site on Rome Trout Brook is approximately 1.5 km from
the confluence with Great Pond. Northern pike were confirmed in Great Pond in
1980. One pike was captured within the survey section in 1998, 2001, and 2002.
2001 and 2002 also correspond to years of below average precipitation and stream
levels were subsequently quite low (Figure 3). Years 2001 and 2002 also
correspond to years of overall lowest fish diversity (Figure 4) and YOY brook trout
abundance (Figure 5).
