BLM Restoration
Since 2014, the Grants Program has awarded more than $3.2 million to the BLM for
restoration projects. Depending on available resources, projects range from Field Officewide
programs that address ongoing trespass and degradation issues, to smaller sitespecific
undertakings. For example,
the BLM Needles Field Office
has undertaken a project that will
fund preparation of environmental
documentation for route restoration
projects in the Alabama Hills Special
Recreation Management Area.
Similarly, the BLM El Centro Field
Office was awarded OHV restoration
funding to protect the North Algodones
Dunes Wilderness (approximately
26,000 acres) and the Peirson’s milkvetch
critical habitat (approximately
9,046 acres) in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. In addition, the BLM Barstow
Field Office received a grant to enclose and restore a 5,000-acre area within the Juniper
Flats Subregion that was damaged by unauthorized OHV activity. The grant increased the
amount of habitat for local wildlife, increased vegetative cover, and reduced the erosion
potential for the area. The project also included signing of open riding areas and public
outreach to let OHV enthusiasts know where it is legal to recreate.
USFS Restoration
Since 2014, the Grants Program has awarded
over $4.2 million to the USFS for restoration
projects. Restoration projects on USFS lands have
restored and protected areas like the Chiquito
Creek watershed on the Sierra National Forest,
and repaired unauthorized trails on the Mendocino
National Forest. The Tahoe National Forest
has undertaken a restoration project to restore
unauthorized routes in the Camp Project area near
Camptonville. Those are just a few examples of
USFS restoration efforts supported by the Grants
Program.
