The new owners destroyed the town’s remaining buildings and sold off the factory’s<br />

equipment. Remnants of Carnegie’s past, including building foundations, railroad routes,<br />

and lime kilns can still be seen throughout<br />

the park today. Carnegie Brick and Pottery<br />

Company’s legacy continues in buildings<br />

built with Carnegie brick and terra cotta<br />

such as the Oakland Hotel, the Los<br />

Angeles County Natural History Museum,<br />

and the Carnegie Libraries in Livermore<br />

and Lodi. Private ranches, predominantly<br />

for cattle grazing, next occupied the land.<br />

By the early 1940s, motorcyclists had<br />

discovered the durable clay soils of Corral<br />

Hollow were good for OHV recreation. In<br />

1970, Carnegie was purchased for a private motorcycle park, known as the Carnegie Cycle<br />

Park. Improvements were made to the park, but due to increasing insurance costs and<br />

operating expenses, the property was sold to the state for $1.2 million in 1979.<br />
