OHMVR Division Grants and Cooperative Agreements
Program Law Enforcement Funding
The California State Legislature appropriates 20 percent of the Grants Program funding
for OHV law enforcement. Out of this 20 percent allocation, BLM receives 30 percent,
USFS receives 30 percent, and local agencies
receive 40 percent each year. Law enforcement
grants are awarded to BLM, USFS, and County
Sheriffs to hire personnel and purchase
equipment, such as vehicles, to patrol OHV areas,
protect resources, and prevent unauthorized
access to public and private lands.
From 2008-2016, the OHMVR Grants Program
awarded approximately $42 million in law
enforcement grants to local, state, and federal
agencies—$12.5 million was awarded to BLM,
$12.7 million was awarded to the USFS, and $17
million was awarded to local law enforcement
agencies. Law enforcement funds are distributed on a non-competitive basis and are
proportionate to the needs within each entity’s jurisdiction. The set level of funding available
