Heber Dunes SVRA<br />

Heber Dunes SVRA is located three miles<br />

north of the Mexican border crossing at Location: Imperial County<br />

Highway 7 (Calexico/Mexicali) in Imperial Total Park Acreage: 341<br />

has intensely hot summers, with several months of temperatures over 100 degrees, often<br />

exceeding 115 degrees. Nighttime lows for most of the summer are in the high 80s. Winters<br />

are mild and frosts uncommon.<br />

Heber Dunes became an SVRA in 2007.<br />

Although relatively small, encompassing<br />

341 acres, it fulfills an important recreational<br />

need for local residents and is a setting for<br />

many families to gather, picnic, and socialize.<br />

The SVRA is especially popular with ATV<br />

riders; however, some dune buggies, ROVs,<br />

and motorcycle riders also visit the park.<br />

The park is for day use only; there are no<br />

camping facilities. The SVRA offers a variety of recreational challenges including winding<br />

trails through the creosote-studded sand dunes, large “fine sand” sand dunes, and dry<br />

lakebeds with hard packed clay.<br />

Facilities and Recreational Opportunities<br />

A recently completed group area with a raised viewing area, grills, picnic tables, and a wash<br />

station is available for large family or group gatherings. This area is conveniently located<br />

next to the park’s water fountains, restroom/pay shower facilities, paved parking, the training<br />

and practice area, and the park administration and maintenance building.<br />

Additional shade ramadas, picnic tables, and fire rings are located throughout the park.<br />

Families and friends frequent Heber Dunes SVRA and enjoy picnicking, barbecuing, and<br />

recreating, or watching people recreate. The sand dunes and dense groves of tamarisk<br />

trees that prevail throughout the park offer a unique desert recreation experience, providing<br />
