Youth Recreation Days
On October 15 and 16, 2016, at-risk youth
involved with the Los Angeles County
Department of Children and Family Services
Foster Program participated in the Youth
Recreation Days event at the Castaic Lake
Recreation Area. Youth Recreation Days
is a collaborative partnership program that
promotes public health, safety, team building,
provides volunteer and/or career opportunities,
and encourages community development.
Participants experienced the benefits of outdoor recreation while they participated in kayaking,
canoeing, ATV riding, Dragon Boat paddling, and an environmental education program
promoting the responsible recreation and awareness of California’s wildlife.
Members of the Youth Recreation Days partnership include the Los Angeles County
Department of Parks and Recreation; Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office; California State
University Northridge Aquatic Center; Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family
Services; Honda’s Colton Rider Education Center; Los Angeles County Fire Department; and
California State Parks and Recreation, OHMVR Division.
ATV Riding Experience
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office,
Honda, and the OHMVR Division offered an
ATV riding experience where participants
donned safety gear and had the thrill of
riding an ATV in a safe and environmentally
responsible manner.
Environmental Education
The San Andreas District outreach team delivered an environmental education program that
gave the at-risk youth an opportunity to view native wildlife and learn Tread Lightly! ® principles.
Participants then applied the Tread Lightly! ® principles as they navigated remote-controlled
Jeeps ® through a course that simulated a 4x4 trail.
Based on the success of this year’s event and one held in 2014, the team is planning to make
Youth Recreation Days an annual event with even more recreational opportunities. In addition,
California State Parks is interested in providing a similar program in other areas of the state.
