Studio Miti is a design studio that stands out for
its distinctive approach to architecture. Their design
is characterized by its multidimensional nature,
achieved through purposeful spatial manipulation
and meticulous material selection. These elements
work together to create an architecture that is
simultaneously solid and dynamically responsive
to its context. The design not only considers spaces
in the x and y axes but also incorporates other physical
dimensions of spatial relationships, such as
width and length. Studio Miti places special emphasis
on the z-axis, which represents the deeper
and more profound aspects of architectural design.
This axis is crucial, for it can be associated with
various types of relationships and interconnected
factors within the surrounding environment. The
culmination of the unique design process is reflected
in the work’s originality, which is derived
from the specific and non-repetitive conditions
from which the design has evolved.
The nature of the two founders, Prakij Kanha and
Padirmkiat Sukkan, became the foundation for the
studio’s design approach, which puts “people” as
the central element. The word ‘people’ in question
encompasses not only designers and the studio’s
staff members but also the owners, engineers,
and contractors, accompanied by the site’s surrounding
context. This similarities and differences
in their characters form the cornerstone of the
studio’s design formula, where everything is based
on human experiences and time, both of which
are subject to change. To achieve such interconnectedness,
it is necessary to have a comprehensive
understanding of every aspect of design.
Studio Miti always begins each project with a
dedicated period of research and data collection.
This allows them to thoroughly explore and understand
all relevant aspects through an architectural
thinking process. By doing so, they are able
to uncover new possibilities in design, whether
it be in regards to space, function, materials,
or cost-effectiveness.
Studio Miti then began experimenting with various
building materials. This allowed them to gain a
deeper understanding of the conditions and behaviors
exhibited by each material when used in
specific contexts. The process of trial and error
led to a better understanding of the versatility
of materials, enabling the development of applications
that are even more diverse, original, and
functional. By effectively balancing the owner’s
basic requirements and budget while working to
inventively incorporate the skills and knowledge
of experienced local builders and artisans, the
architectural spaces can be improved across
various aspects.
Lack of knowledge, uncertainty, and even fear
are all obstacles that Studio Miti had to face and
overcome. It’s a gradual process of acquiring a
broader perspective, which in turn leads to new
challenges and changes. The new office building
in Soi Lad Proa Alley is a testament to the studio’s
growth. The current operation base embodies
Studio Miti’s identity, with its style and approach
emanating from the previous red brick structure.
