(Interlocking
Block System)
concrete blocks, emphasizing immediacy and
versality. Aimed at enable low-income individuals to
become homeowners, the project involved residents
directly in the construction process. It utilized a
load-bearing wall system made from an original
interlocking concrete block system, which elimi
nated the need for wooden formwork typical in
reinforced concrete (RC) or traditional masonry
work. This system was especially suitable for those
without construction experience. Residents, initially
strangers, worked together in a self-help factory
on-site, using raw materials like sand, stone, and
cement to create building materials for their future
homes 1 . More than four decades after its completion,
it is surprising that the project still retains a distinctive
character and scale amidst its surrounding.
Probably its uniqueness lies in the construction
method, which differs from the conventional postand-beam
with masonry wall systems. The fact
that all blocks work as load bearing elements has
led these houses to remain without large modification,
despite the surrounding city’s growth and
