How does this word define the material or immaterial objects in the field of architecture? Where does thinking about ‘block’ today take us? ‘Block' is a word in transparency. It is a geometrical concept prior to material. It is a thick, load-bearing substance with several flat surfaces. Material is processed into its geometric form and brought to the site as block. The block is assembled as a part of the construction method. Processing and construction are bound by this certain geometry. Tiles, sheets, panels, etc., are words that refer to the same material's geometric state as blocks. Each noun refers to certain verbs as their origins of word; ‘tile' derives from ‘to cover', ‘sheet' from ‘to project,' and ‘block' from ‘log’ and then 'to obstruct'. The purpose and action after its assembly are even indicated with in its origin. It is at the juncture of past labor and future motion. Block is a universal human construction that cuts, processes, stacks, and creates territories from the earth. If we only look at the result, a solid material with thickness brings robust differences to the environment. On the other hand, if we look across time, block is a generous and embracing system. The process on-site, the repeated stacking. The sound of the trowel holding back the mortar and tapping the block to level it resonates through the site. Unlike the rapid changes in concrete or panel construction methods, the structure rises slowly with flowing body and time.
