Renco, an American manufacturer, has
developed a building block of reused
materials that can interlock and stack,
allowing for construction similar to
LEGO.
According to Renco, the block’s composition
and design, which consist of
glass fibers, resin, and stone, result in a
stronger, less energy-intensive, and
more cost-effective choice for construction.
It resembles a tangible LEGO kit,
consisting of molded blocks that fit
together to form whole constructions by
adopting an approach similar to LEGO
kits. This results in reduced construction
time and energy usage.
A single block is constructed utilizing
a composite material of glass fibers,
resin, and stone, incorporating 40
percent of reused resources sourced
from industries such as boat building.
Every molded block has a rectangular
shape and is equipped with a sequence
of knobs that fit together and can be
stacked. The standard dimensions of
the block are 8 by 8 by 16 inches (20
by 20 by 40 cm), and its weight is
approximately 20 percent lighter than
a conventional concrete block. The
blocks are joined together using a twocomponent
methyl methacrylate adhesive,
which is applied using a glue gun.
To construct using Renco, one only
needs a forklift to elevate the materials,
a glue gun fueled by a compact generator
and a mallet. Crews can complete
the task without using heavy machinery
or electric tools, eliminating the requirement
for external scaffolding, large
cranes, and activities like cutting, burning,
welding, or grinding. The block’s design
additionally decreases the duration of
construction.
Following natural disasters, the blocks
were initially implemented in Turkey to
expedite and make infrastructure reconstruction
more cost-effective. According
to the manufacturer, the construction
blocks in the US have successfully
undergone over 400 stringent safety
tests, and they are being used in the
construction of apartment complexes
in Florida.
