While glass blocks have been commonly used in
home decoration for quite some time, its presence
in modern architectural design remains fairly minimal
due to various installation limitations, weightbearing
capacity, and user experience issues.
For this specific project, pbm collaborated closely
with the engineering team, the materials’ manufacturer,
and the contractor responsible for the
installation. The goal was to create a design that
not only met the building’s functional requirements
but also achieved the desired aesthetic appeal.
The installation details were modified from the
original technique, which involved using steel
bars as the frames to increase the blocks’ integral
strength. Although the 1-cm grout lines may be
visually unpleasant, they are unavoidable. During
the development process, the design team chose to
implement a module system for ease of installation.
Aluminum channels and sheets provide increased
strength while maintaining a thinner physical profile
compared to traditional installation techniques.
The final result is majestic walls of glass blocks
that beautifully complement the steel structure of
the building.
