As in Mauritania, the potential for developing a whale watching
industry may exist in Senegal, although no formal industry has
developed yet. A feasibility study into small‐scale, community
based cetacean watching may be undertaken for the wider region
(West Africa) but has not been commissioned yet (Diallo, pers.
comm., 2008).
Between 1995 and 2005, inbound tourist arrivals to Senegal
increased from 280,000 to 769,000, an annual average growth rate
of 10.6%. As of 2008, it doesn’t appear that this large increase in
inbound tourism has led to the growth in, or development of, a more formal whale watching industry.
