Materials Used for Packing<br />

Hessian Cloth : Made from the good quality jute fibers.<br />

Sacking Cloth : Made from the raw grade jute fibers.<br />

Plastics : Low & high density polyethylene, polypropylene, nyl<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Paddy and Wheat Straw : For wrapping the earthen ball of the saplings<br />

Sphagnum Moss : For wrapping the earthen ball of the saplings<br />

Dried Grass : For wrapping the earthen ball of the saplings<br />

Moistened Moss Grass : For wrapping up the delicate planting material like<br />

vegetable and ornamental flower seedlings before packing.<br />

Bottles or Tins : For storage of clean seeds<br />

Bamboo-Matted Boxes : For storage of bulbs, tubers and corms<br />

Characteristics of Ideal Packing Material<br />

� It should be cheap, easily available and highly suitable for the material to be packed.<br />

� It should deliver the plants c<strong>on</strong>veniently without affecting the quality and look<br />

attractive to the indenters.<br />

� It should ensure protecti<strong>on</strong> against drying out and mechanical injury. It must be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venient and ec<strong>on</strong>omical to handle.<br />

� It should be well adapted to transport, loading with security and ec<strong>on</strong>omy in volume<br />

and weight.<br />

Packaging Material: Seedling Tray<br />

Care of Planting Material during Packing<br />

� Packing of seeds or plants or bulbs etc. should be d<strong>on</strong>e carefully so as to supply the<br />

planting material in safe and sound c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

� During placing of the planting material into a package avoid bruising. Due care of<br />

grafted and budded plants should be taken to avoid the breakage of joint of the graft.<br />

Transportati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>Nursery</strong> Plants<br />

The plants must be picked up the day they were received by the transport agency.<br />

These agencies do not have proper seedling storage facilities and the seedlings deteriorate<br />
