B. Canna: The leaves may be green, br<strong>on</strong>zy-green, or br<strong>on</strong>ze colored and there are<br />

cultivars having streaked variegated foliage. Cannas are hardy and beautiful plants<br />

bearing flowers in different colors and shades. This is <strong>on</strong>e of the best plants for<br />

growing in beds, especially in the midst of lawns. Cannas are generally<br />

propagated by the divisi<strong>on</strong> of rhizomes. The best seas<strong>on</strong> for planting the rhizomes<br />

is just before the rains, i.e., during June-July. A sunny situati<strong>on</strong> and rich soil are<br />

required for the cultivati<strong>on</strong> of canna. The rhizomes are planted 7- 10 cm deep in<br />

the soil.<br />

C. Crinum: These are tall growing plants with strap-shaped leaves. The plants are<br />

grown in borders, pots, and near pools. The plants like swampy or marshy and<br />

semi-shady places. Propagati<strong>on</strong> is from bulbs. The flowering is profuse during the<br />

rains. The plants can remain in pots or borders for several years. It is a hardy plant<br />

needing very little care.<br />

D. Gloriosa superba: It is a creeping plant which climbs with the tendrils. The l<strong>on</strong>glasting<br />

flowers open primrose-yellow and later turn to orange-red or dark red. The<br />

petals are l<strong>on</strong>g, twisted or wavy, and heavily corrugated. It is suitable for growing<br />

in pots or in ground. The flowers last l<strong>on</strong>g in vase. The tubers are planted<br />

horiz<strong>on</strong>tally in March-April and the flowering seas<strong>on</strong> extends from July to<br />

September. The plant needs a light soil and plenty of watering.<br />

8. Cactus and Succulents<br />

a. Cactus: The group of plants bel<strong>on</strong>ging to the family Cactaceae with<br />

characteristics like presence of arioles (spine-cushi<strong>on</strong>), perennial fruits being <strong>on</strong>e<br />

celled berry, dicotyled<strong>on</strong>ous and flower petals arising from top of the ovary are<br />

called cactus. Example, Astrophytum, Echinipsis, Lobivia, Parodia etc.<br />
