There is no standard formula for designing a nursery outlet, as shelters, barns or<br />

special buildings may be used. They should be clean and tidy with enough space for<br />

displaying produce. A special type of farm sales is the "U-pick" or "pick-your-own"<br />

system. C<strong>on</strong>sumers can choose and packaged plants <strong>on</strong> their own. In this type of nursery<br />

outlet, some plant has already been harvested and packaged. Sales are carried out in<br />

height, volume or units. The main benefit to the nurseryman with this form of direct<br />

marketing method is there is no need to harvest the plant. It also eliminates the need for<br />

sorting and packaging costs. This results in lower prices, making the plant more attractive<br />

to the c<strong>on</strong>sumer. The customer also has the opportunity of spending a day outdoors in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tact with nature.<br />

Export of <strong>Nursery</strong> Plants<br />

Some exports require an export License before you can ship your plants. Some<br />

foreign countries have standards that you should be aware. There are some countries<br />

where <strong>on</strong>e cannot sell plants. Use this secti<strong>on</strong> as a primer to familiarize yourself with the<br />

licenses, standards, and legal c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s that may apply to your plants.<br />

Export Licenses<br />

Learn when you need an Export License and from whom in order to ship your plants<br />

from India. Export licenses are issued for individual transacti<strong>on</strong>s determined by the<br />

product, the country, the end-use and the end-user.<br />

Foreign Standards and Certificati<strong>on</strong> Informati<strong>on</strong><br />

Many foreign countries have their own standards and import certificati<strong>on</strong><br />

requirements <strong>on</strong> things like: product standards, certificati<strong>on</strong> requirements, electricity<br />

regulati<strong>on</strong>s, packaging and recycling laws and quality expectati<strong>on</strong>s. If you want to sell<br />

your plants in foreign markets you should be aware of these Foreign Standards and<br />

Certificati<strong>on</strong> Requirements. When exporting, it is essential to be aware of the various<br />

regulati<strong>on</strong>s and Legal C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s that pertain to your nursery plants.<br />

8.2.5 Ec<strong>on</strong>omics of Ornamental Plant <strong>Nursery</strong><br />

India ranks 28 th in the ornamental plant producti<strong>on</strong> in the world. Ornamental plants<br />

produced in India include woody ornamentals (landscape trees and shrubs), foliage,<br />

flowering plant products, cut foliage and turfgrass sod. India dominates producti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

foliage plants. Growth of the ornamental plant industry in India has shown increasing<br />

sales annually.<br />

Seas<strong>on</strong>al Sales<br />

All industry groups generally followed similar trends, with peak sales during the<br />

M<strong>on</strong>so<strong>on</strong> (June–October), followed by declining summertime sales. Flowering plant<br />

nurseries had dramatically more seas<strong>on</strong>al sales, with nearly 50 percent of annual sales<br />

during the m<strong>on</strong>so<strong>on</strong> and less than five percent m<strong>on</strong>thly during the summer.<br />
