The newly introduced chemicals are often found to replace the older <strong>on</strong>es. Some<br />

chemicals impart hazardous effects <strong>on</strong> humans, animals, plants and envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

Therefore care should be taken to select the appropriate chemicals for use.<br />

Restricted or Banned chemicals in the form of fertilizers, weedicides, pesticides,<br />

fungicides, acaricides, bactericides, etc should be avoided. The State Agriculture<br />

Department, Central Department, State Agriculture Universities should be c<strong>on</strong>sulted from<br />

time to time for the updated status in this regards.<br />

4.3 Glossary<br />

Bacteria: Prokaryotic microorganisms, which are involved in decompositi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Bio-pesticide: The term biopesticide is used for the microbial preparati<strong>on</strong> or biological<br />

pest c<strong>on</strong>trol agents that are applied in a similar manner to chemical pesticides.<br />

Caterpillar: Caterpillars are the larval form of a member of the order Lepidoptera.<br />

Coleoptera: The order of insects comprising the beetles.<br />

Crop Rotati<strong>on</strong>: Crop rotati<strong>on</strong> is the practice of growing a series of dissimilar types of<br />

crops in the same area in sequential seas<strong>on</strong>s for various benefits such as to avoid the<br />

buildup of pathogens and pests which occurswhen <strong>on</strong>e species is c<strong>on</strong>tinuously<br />

cropped.<br />

Diptera: The order of insects comprising the flies.<br />

Disease: A disease is an abnormal c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> affecting the body of an organism.<br />

Fungi: A fungus is a member of a large group of eukaryotic organisms that includes<br />

microorganisms such as yeasts and molds as well as the more familiar mushrooms.<br />

Fungicide Fungicides are chemical compounds or biological organisms used to kill or<br />

inhibit fungi and fungal spores.<br />

Mycoplasm: Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that lack a cell wall. Without a cell wall,<br />

they are unaffected by many comm<strong>on</strong> antibiotics such as penicillin or other<br />

betalactam antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis.<br />

Nematode: The nematodes are the most diverse phylum of pseudocoelomates and <strong>on</strong>e of<br />

the most diverse of all animals.<br />

Parasite: A parasite is an organism that lives <strong>on</strong> or inside another organism to the<br />

detriment of the host organism.<br />

Pathogen: A pathogen or infectious agent is a microbe or microorganism such as a virus,<br />

bacterium, pri<strong>on</strong>, or fungus that causes disease in its plant host.<br />

Pesticide: A pesticide is any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing,<br />

destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest.<br />

Predator: An organism which c<strong>on</strong>sumes live organisms as its source of food.<br />

Trap crop: A trap crop is a plant that attracts agricultural pests, usually insects, away<br />

from nearby crops.<br />

Variety: A variety is a plant or group of plants selected for desirable characteristics that<br />

can be maintained by propagati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Vector: An insect or mite that transmits viruses.<br />
