5.3 Glossary<br />

De-Potting: Removal of plant from the pot is known as de-potting.<br />

Drainage : Drainage means the process of removing excess water from the soil or bed or<br />

pot.<br />

Mulch : Mulch is a layer of organic materials like bark, sphagnum peat moss, muck peat,<br />

compost, pine needles or inorganic materials like gravel, plastic, or any similar<br />

material uniformly spread <strong>on</strong> the surface of the soil under plants.<br />

Mulching : Mulching is the practice of placing some mulch materials in the nursery beds<br />

mainly to regulate soil temperature, c<strong>on</strong>serve moisture and suppress weed growth.<br />

Packing : It is defined as placing the nursery plants or plant propagating materials into a<br />

suitable c<strong>on</strong>tainer for easy storage and transport.<br />

Plant Growth Regulators: Plant growth regulators are the chemical compounds other<br />

than nutrients which are required in a small quantity to regulate, modify or inhibit<br />

the plant physiological processes.<br />

Plant Horm<strong>on</strong>es: Plant growth horm<strong>on</strong>es are the chemical compounds synthesized by<br />

the plant inside its body and are transported from the site of producti<strong>on</strong> to site of<br />

acti<strong>on</strong> to regulate, modify or inhibit the plant physiological processes.<br />

Potting : When a plant is transferred from seed bed or a flat bed to pot, this is called<br />

potting.<br />

Pruning : Pruning is an operati<strong>on</strong> for the removal of live or dead branches and pest and<br />

disease infested branches from nursery plants for the improvement the structure and<br />

health of the nursery plants.<br />

Re-potting: The act of transfer of plants from <strong>on</strong>e pot to another pot is called as<br />

repotting.<br />

Sanitati<strong>on</strong>: The formulati<strong>on</strong> and applicati<strong>on</strong> of measures designed to protect plant health.<br />

Training: Training may include operati<strong>on</strong>s leading to staking or supporting to a nursery<br />

plants and it also primarily d<strong>on</strong>e to give proper shape to the nursery plants.<br />

5.4 Points To Remember<br />

1. Sanitati<strong>on</strong> and drainage are the basic requirements in a horticulture nursery.<br />

2. Training, Pruning, Potting, Repotting and Mulching are the regular operati<strong>on</strong>s to be<br />

carried out in any horticulture nursery.<br />

3. Plant Growth Regulators (PGR) are used in liquid, powder or paste form in plant<br />

propagati<strong>on</strong> nurseries.<br />
