1. Support under State Department Scheme<br />

All the schemes of the State Government for horticulture development are being<br />

implemented through the Department of Agriculture. Some important schemes that are<br />

available for the nursery plant producti<strong>on</strong> are menti<strong>on</strong>ed herewith:<br />

� <strong>Horticulture</strong> plantati<strong>on</strong> schemes is in existence since 1990 under the Employment<br />

Guarantee Scheme under which the farmers are provided assistance for supply of<br />

improved variety of fruit plants for commercial cultivati<strong>on</strong>. Under this scheme the<br />

farmers are supplied the fruit plants from various registered and licensed nurseries.<br />

� The horticultural fruit plants are made available from the Government nurseries<br />

operating under the Department of Agriculture at Government rates.<br />

� C<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> of local mango, cashew, ber orchards into improved varieties. Support is<br />

offered to farmers are growing fruit plants from local planting material for c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong><br />

of local stock into improved and high yielding plants.<br />

� Support for establishment of nursery under Private Sector is provided for individual<br />

entrepreneurs, registered cooperative societies and quasi-Government Institutes. Here,<br />

they are eligible for support to an extent of Rs 20,000/- with a producti<strong>on</strong> target of<br />

8000 grafted plants.<br />

� Assistance for rejuvenati<strong>on</strong> of old and senile orchards is especially provided where<br />

the orchards are old, poorly managed and have a very poor yield.<br />

� Assistance to nurseries for installati<strong>on</strong> of micro-irrigati<strong>on</strong> system is also provided<br />

which is a major scheme of Department of Agriculture for ec<strong>on</strong>omizing the use of<br />

irrigati<strong>on</strong> water.<br />

� Support for establishment of polyhouse and shadenet house for producti<strong>on</strong> of quality<br />

planting material is provided. This support is provided for both types of (semiautomated<br />

and fully-automated) polyhouses and shadenet houses.<br />

� Assistance is also provided to nurseries for mulching the mother trees so as to<br />

increase the supply of quality planting material by them.<br />

� Support for multiplicati<strong>on</strong> of medicinal and aromatic plants and producti<strong>on</strong> of seed<br />

material is provided to nurseries.<br />

� Area Extensi<strong>on</strong> Scheme for Cl<strong>on</strong>al planting material is available for assistance<br />

especially with reference to extensi<strong>on</strong> of cashew plantati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

� Assistance to farmers is also extended under the Integrated Spices Development<br />

scheme. This scheme supports cultivati<strong>on</strong> of black pepper, clove, ginger and turmeric<br />

crops.<br />

� Support for cultivati<strong>on</strong> of vegetables <strong>on</strong> small scale is available under Mini Kit<br />

Vegetable scheme. This scheme extends support for use of improved and hybrid<br />

varieties and other aspects of improved technology.<br />

2. Support for Nurseries under Nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Horticulture</strong> Missi<strong>on</strong><br />

Producti<strong>on</strong> and distributi<strong>on</strong> of good quality seeds and planting material is an<br />

important focus of the Nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Horticulture</strong> Missi<strong>on</strong>. Most of the States have a network<br />

of central or state assisted nurseries for producing planting material. For the new areas<br />

coming under cultivati<strong>on</strong> of improved varieties assistance is provided to setup new<br />
