5.1 Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

A horticulture nursery is a place, where seedlings, saplings, trees, shrubs and other<br />

plant materials are grown and maintained until they are planted in permanent places or<br />

sold. Raising the plant and maintaining it in a good c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> is a very difficult task<br />

requiring timely m<strong>on</strong>itoring of the plant. Raising seedlings and maintaining the young<br />

plants in a nursery is a c<strong>on</strong>tinuous process. One must have complete informati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

know how about sanitati<strong>on</strong> and cleanliness in the nursery, proper drainage of excess<br />

water, training and pruning of plants during its growth in the nursery. Filling of the pots<br />

and transfer of plants to another pot or bag with due care, utilizati<strong>on</strong> of mulching material<br />

to minimize the water requirement, applicati<strong>on</strong> of plant growth regulators for propagati<strong>on</strong><br />

of plants, proper handling, packing and transport practices of nursery plants and effective<br />

selling of plants by providing customer care services are all the important aspects in the<br />

management of a nursery. It is utterly necessary to perform all these processes with<br />

proper care and in a well planned manner so as to obtain maximum profits from a<br />

Horticultural <strong>Nursery</strong>.<br />

With the growing cities and rapid development in the nati<strong>on</strong>, aesthetics and<br />

beautificati<strong>on</strong> is gaining importance. The horticulture nursery management has now<br />

gained a status of commercial venture. Retailer nurseries sell planting materials to the<br />

general public. Wholesale nurseries sell to other nurseries and commercial landscape<br />

gardeners. Private nurseries cater to the needs of instituti<strong>on</strong>s or private estates.<br />
