General Quality Standards for <strong>Nursery</strong> Plant<br />

� The graft uni<strong>on</strong> should be healthy and the size of sci<strong>on</strong> and rootstock should be<br />

equal.<br />

� Color of leaf, morphology of leaf should be in proper standard in according to<br />

variety and species.<br />

� The nursery plant should be free from disease and pest and have a vigorous growth.<br />

� The shoot and root development of nursery plant should be in proper ratio. The<br />

nursery plants should be free from weeds.<br />

6.3 Glossary<br />

Bud uni<strong>on</strong>/Graft uni<strong>on</strong>: A swollen area just above the soil level where <strong>on</strong>e variety has<br />

been <strong>on</strong>to the rootstock of another variety. The bud uni<strong>on</strong> is not always swollen, and<br />

<strong>on</strong> some older plants it can be difficult to find. On young bare-root trees the bud<br />

uni<strong>on</strong> may look like a slight bend.<br />

Budding: Means of vegetative propagati<strong>on</strong> where the sci<strong>on</strong> is reduced to a single bud<br />

which is inserted into a rootstock.<br />

Dormancy: A state of suspended growth or the lack of outwardly visible activity caused<br />

by envir<strong>on</strong>mental or internal factors in a seed or bud.<br />
