widely am<strong>on</strong>g industry groups. In general, high asset turnover is desirable,<br />

indicating greater sales per rupee of investment. Low asset turnover rates may<br />

result from low labor or space productivity or excessive capital investment.<br />

7. Employee Wages and Benefits: This is the largest expense category for<br />

ornamental plant nurseries. In additi<strong>on</strong> to wages and salaries, this category<br />

included payroll taxes, workers compensati<strong>on</strong> insurance, health insurance,<br />

b<strong>on</strong>uses, and other benefits paid. Labor costs were str<strong>on</strong>gly related to profitability.<br />

By industry group, labor costs, as a share of value produced, were highest for<br />

foliage firms and lowest for field woody ornamentals growers.<br />

8. Supplies: Direct expenses for supplies or "cost of goods sold" included expenses<br />

for plants and seeds, c<strong>on</strong>tainers, peat and soil, fertilizer and lime, pesticides and<br />

chemicals, packaging materials, heating fuel, and other producti<strong>on</strong> supplies such<br />

as tags and small tools. Shrinkage in supply inventories is also included in this<br />

category but is an insignificant amount in all cases.<br />

9. Facility and Equipment: Repairs and maintenance for nursery facilities and<br />

equipment operating costs (i.e. fuel) more for large firms and less for smaller<br />

nurseries. These expenses have increased day by day. Facility and equipment<br />

costs as a share of value produced averaged five percent for firms.<br />

10. Administrative and Overhead Costs: This broad category included expenses for<br />

travel and entertainment, property insurance, teleph<strong>on</strong>e, electric power,<br />

advertising, property taxes and business licenses, rent, and other cash expenses<br />

(i.e. professi<strong>on</strong>al services, trade associati<strong>on</strong> memberships, office, and<br />

miscellaneous). These costs were similar for plant industry groups.<br />

11. Interest: Interest expense for borrowed capital more for large firms and less for<br />

small firms. This expense item has increased more day by day, more than any<br />

other expense category. Interest expense, as a share of value produced, averaged 4<br />

per cent in firms.<br />

12. Depreciati<strong>on</strong>: Depreciati<strong>on</strong> is a n<strong>on</strong>-cash allowance, representing the decreasing<br />

value of assets in buildings and equipment and is a cost of business over the l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

term. Depreciati<strong>on</strong> is generally taken from company income tax returns and<br />

computed according to the ACRS method (3, 5, or 7 years) for equipment and<br />

straight-line or double declining balance methods (10 to 20 years) for buildings<br />

and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

13. Total Costs: Total operating costs includes Supplies, Plants & seeds, C<strong>on</strong>tainers,<br />

Heating fuel, Growing media, Fertilizer/lime, Chemicals, Packaging, Other<br />

supplies, Facility & equipment, Facility repair/ maintenance, Vehicle &<br />

Equipment operati<strong>on</strong>, Overhead, Travel & entertainment, Insurance, Teleph<strong>on</strong>e,<br />

Electric power, Taxes & licenses, Advertising, Rent, Other expenses,<br />

Depreciati<strong>on</strong> allowance, Interest, etc.<br />

14. Cost per Square Foot: The cost per unit of growing space is a useful measure for<br />

estimating individual plant growing costs or comparing cost efficiencies of<br />

different producti<strong>on</strong> systems. These results paralleled those for value of<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> per square foot and inventory turnover.<br />
