Productivity Indicators<br />
1. Value Produced per Square Foot: The productivity of nursery space is<br />
measured by value of producti<strong>on</strong> per square foot of growing space. Foliage and<br />
flowering plant nurseries had significantly higher value per square foot because of<br />
their highly intensive producti<strong>on</strong> systems, while woody c<strong>on</strong>tainer and field firms<br />
have much lower values, and foliage growers were intermediate. Value produced<br />
per square foot is affected by nursery layout and space utilizati<strong>on</strong> efficiency, plant<br />
growth rates and survival, and inventory turnover.<br />
2. Value Produced per Worker: Labor productivity was measured in terms of<br />
value produced per full-time equivalent (FTE) worker. Value per FTE worker<br />
averaged higher for large firms, and lower for small firms. Highly profitable firms<br />
had above-average labor productivity. Labor productivity varied am<strong>on</strong>g industry<br />
groups relatively less than other resource productivity measures. Woody c<strong>on</strong>tainer<br />
and field growers had values produced per worker is medium, foliage nurseries<br />
averaged is lower and flowering plant firms averaged more per FTE compared to<br />
each other. Variati<strong>on</strong>s in labor productivity may result from differences in<br />
investment for labor-saving equipment, labor management practices and practices<br />
affecting crop turnover.<br />
3. Plant Inventory Turnover: This is an indicator of productivity that expresses the<br />
rate at which inventory is replaced <strong>on</strong> an <strong>on</strong>going basis, calculated as the ratio of<br />
annual sales to average inventory value. This measure accounts for the inherent<br />
value of different nursery crops. It can be interpreted as the number of crops per<br />
year. Inventory turnover is less for large firms, more for small firms. Inventory<br />
turnover generally has followed a pattern am<strong>on</strong>g industry groups similar to that<br />
for value produced per square foot high values for flowering plant and foliage<br />
nurseries, lower values for woody ornamental firms. Low inventory turnover is<br />
comm<strong>on</strong> for new and rapidly expanding firms because of large inventories of<br />
immature plants.<br />
4. Operating Expenses: Operating expenses by nursery firms were grouped into the<br />
categories of management compensati<strong>on</strong>, employee wages and benefits, supplies,<br />
facility and equipment, administrative and overhead, depreciati<strong>on</strong>, and interest.<br />
Expenses for income taxes were not included in this analysis. Analysis of<br />
expenses in relati<strong>on</strong> to the value of producti<strong>on</strong> is a reliable measure of cost<br />
efficiency that enables comparis<strong>on</strong> of costs for different types of firms <strong>on</strong> a<br />
standardized basis. For each expense category, expenses were divided by total<br />
value of producti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
5. <strong>Management</strong> Compensati<strong>on</strong>: Salaries and benefits paid to owners and top<br />
management higher for large firms and lower for small firms. <strong>Management</strong><br />
compensati<strong>on</strong> has increased year by year. <strong>Management</strong> cost per-rupees value<br />
produced has decreased year by year. Because of ec<strong>on</strong>omies of scale, differences<br />
in management cost efficiency am<strong>on</strong>g industry groups are mostly due to<br />
differences in average size of firms.<br />
6. Asset Turnover: This indicator is analogous to inventory turnover except that it<br />
