ABSTRACTThis review describes the characteristics of the changes in health and functioning of agingadults with cerebral palsy (CP), the period of life when these changes usually appear andintervention studies examining adults with CP aged 30 years or older. The documentationis based on research- and review articles obtained from the PubMed, MEDLINE, Medic,SveMed+, CINAHL, OT-seeker, PEDro, PsycINFO, ERIC, Cochrane, A SAGE Full-TextCollection, Political science, Social services abstracts and Sociological abstracts -databases,and Google-search engine, published between years 1990–2008. Additionally, articles weresearched by tracing the lists of references.Age related musculoskeletal changes that deteriorate functioning appear e.g. in a person’sability to perform activities of daily living, walking and mobility. Functional decline amongadults with CP begins commonly between years 20-30. In addition to different physicalchanges, adults with CP experience age-related emotional changes. Both physical andemotional changes affect the independence, life style, health and social situations of adultswith CP. This review showed that research focusing in aging adults with CP is splintery, andthere is a lack especially of intervention studies and studies describing subjective experiencesof persons with CP. Additionally, the review demonstrated that according to modern researchthe understanding on cerebral palsy is very negative as research interests have focused onlimitations, deficiencies, secondary problems and disorders. The review provides information that can be used in developing national standards ofactivities and solutions for improving the well being and functioning of aging adults withCP. Both international and national need for information on CP-related aging processesis major, and this information is required by professionals in the fields of social work, healthcare and rehabilitation, as well as by persons with CP and people close to them.It is hoped that this review will at least partly satisfy this need of information. Challengesof future studies include developing and executing comprehensive and multi-professionalintervention studies that aim at helping adults with CP to achieve better health and well-beingby supporting theirs inclusion and participation in all major life areas. Keywords: cerebral palsy, CP, adult, adulthood, older adults, aging, functioning, ICF,intervention, rehabilitation, rehabilitation of disabled person7
