fantasie dell’Ufficio Hays. – DAVID ROBINSON
Leo McCarey constructs an unfaltering escalation of hysteria. Stan and
Oliver having improbably switched trousers, the first half of the film
concerns their efforts to correct the error, and their consequent,
ever-more humiliating embarrassments when caught, trousers down,
in public places. Incautiously they shelter in an elevator which sweeps
them to the top of a skyscraper under construction. Their battles
with disintegrating scaffolding, unravelling ropes, toppling ladders,
lost footwear, and the effects of gravity in general are aggravated by
the unfriendly attentions of an angry crab, relocated from the seat of
Stanley’s pants to Oliver’s. At one extreme the boys out-class Harold
Lloyd in thrill comedy; at the other the reactions of the strangers
who chance upon their clothes-switching hint at a psycho-sexual
sophistication far beyond the fantasies of the Hays Office.
Jean Darling 90!
di Our Gang. A teatro, nel 1945, sarebbe stata Carrie nell’allestimento
di Rouben Mamoulian di Carousel di Rodgers e Hammerstein, dando
vita all’indimenticabile canzone “When I Marry Mr. Snow”. Sposatasi
spettacolo Magicadabr: lei era l’affascinante partner femminile talvolta
sottoposta a non molto confortevoli incantesimi. Emigrata a Dublino,
A grandissima richiesta, riproporrà
alcuni passati successi, in primis “Oh Mr. Moving Picture Man”,
“Since Mother Went to the Talkies”, “The Cinema Kiss” e, se siamo
fortunati, “When I Marry Mr. Snow”.
Jean Darling, the Giornate’s resident star and legend, celebrated her
90th birthday on 23 August, and for 85 of those years she has remained
an inexhaustible professional entertainer, starting with her debut as
the femme fatale of Our Gang. In the theatre she was to create the
role of Carrie in Rouben Mamoulian’s 1945 premiere production of
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, originating the unforgettable
22
“When I Marry Mr. Snow”. Marrying a stage magician, she toured the
world with his show Magicadabr as a glamorous though sometimes
uncomfortably bewitched partner. Migrating to Dublin she established
a new career as mystery writer, children’s author, and broadcaster.
Generations of Irish children have grown up devoted to her character
of “Auntie Poppy” and the more than 450 stories she told them.
With the phenomenal singing voice still intact and infallibly on key,
she gives her sixth Pordenone “audience”, sharing her voluminous
reminiscences of the golden years of Hollywood and the stars –
including Laurel and Hardy and Clark Gable – who provided her many
surrogate uncles. And of course she will sing vintage songs about the
movies (excavated by Ron Magliozzi and David Robinson), accompanied
by her inseparable stage partner Donald Sosin. By enthusiastic request
they will reprise some past successes, notably “Oh Mr. Moving Picture
Man”, “Since Mother Went to the Talkies”, “The Cinema Kiss”, and –
if we are very lucky – “When I Marry Mr. Snow”.
omaggio a The Artist) a Chagall: “… l’amore a Parigi rischia sempre di
Sarah
Demeestère, oltre che attrice, è anche una cineasta indipendente;
About Love. Ogni episodio del film sarà girato in un paese differente.
DAVID ROBINSON
The Artist already has progeny, in the shape of Le Petit Nuage.
Lighting the set of that film, as Best Boy Electrician, Renée George
was inspired to reassert her ambitions as a director and to pay her
own tribute to the magic of silent cinema. Her credits gratefully
thank, for this inspiration, Michel Hazanavicius, Bérénice Bejo, Jean
Dujardin, and Guillaume Schiffman, but Le Petit Nuage owes nothing
in style to their film, which was an elegant, nostalgic tribute to the
dying years of silent cinema. George uses the trusty old tools of
image and mime, rhythm and music to shape a contemporary/timeless
romantic fantasy, featherlight but lingering. While the French makers
of The Artist went to Hollywood for their love story, the American
George came to Paris, and exploits with sweet irony the touristic
cityscape. Dimitri Keramitas (writing on the website BonjourParis.
com, 2 May 2012) has compared its ambiguities to Chris Marker’s La
Jetée, and the enamoured couple’s cloudy elevation (along with a dog,
in incidental tribute to The Artist) to Chagall: “love in Paris can’t help
seeming a bit like a perfume or wine commercial, but Le Petit Nuage
is also poetic and meditative, with lovely camera-work by Stella Libert
and atmospheric music (by Robert Casal and the director).” Sarah
Demeestère is an independent filmmaker as well as actress; Joffrey
Platel and Sébastien Pierre have mostly worked in theatre.
Le Petit Nuage is planned as the first in a series of short episodes that
will be assembled as a feature film, 7 Short Films About Love. Each
story will be shot in a different country. – DAVID ROBINSON
molto amato e magnificamente celebrato ogni anno a maggio. Inoltre,
stolam gloriae induit eum, et testamentum suum super caput ejus
A fini simbolici, uso temi
