formidable Miss Clever, Apollo cast Ellen Jensen-Eck, a stalwart
actress from the Aarhus Theatre, who had already appeared in two
Danish adventure films, Toldstation No. 13 (Duty Station No. 13,
1913) and Undervandsbaaden (Submarine, 1914). The setting of Das
Geheimschloss (literally, The Secret Castle) appears to be London
(though with some exotic cliff-hanging scenery conveniently close at
hand). Miss Clever is hired by Banker Gibson, who is being blackmailed
by the Black Hand, and whose son the gang kidnap. Miss Clever singlehandedly
brings the criminals to justice after many adventures and
thanks to a bewildering series of disguises, which it would be a pity to
reveal in advance of viewing.
Apollo had big hopes of the anticipated series. Das Geheimschloss
was for its date an elaborate production and was introduced with
a prestigious illustrated brochure and seductive full-colour posters.
Clearly however it was not a good omen that completion of the
film coincided with the outbreak of the First World War. From the
start, Das Geheimschloss fell foul of the censors, apparently on moral
grounds: Miss Clever’s quick changes provide the opportunity for too
generous glimpses of her shapely thighs. Before its release a scene
was cut and the film was banned for children; in 1916 it was banned
“for the duration of the war”; and in 1919 it was banned yet again.
Unsurprisingly, there seem to have been no further episodes.
In the Netherlands however it proved a triumph for the distributorexhibitor
Jean Desmet, who regarded it as one of his blockbuster
thrillers. After showing it regularly for several years he sold it on to
another company. Hence the film did not figure in the great donation
given to the Nederlands Filmmuseum by the Desmet family in
1957: the print was received only in 2006 from a private collector.
The runaway success of Das Geheimschloss in Holland probably
inspired the retrospective import of Ellen Jensen-Eck’s 1914 Danish
adventure film, Undervandsbaaden, to judge from a 1916 newspaper
advertisement for a further Miss Clever film, involving a submarine.
avrebbe continuato a raccontare almeno fino a The Life and Death
168
in Francia, dove Henri viene fatto prigioniero.
L’effetto è in ogni caso impressionante:
particolare interesse.
1914 e poi – sembra – passò in Germania, Danimarca e Russia.
detective Maks. – DAVID ROBINSON & ELIF RONGEN-KAYNAKÇI
Released less than eight months after the outbreak of the First
World War, Wenn Völker streiten (When Nations Quarrel) tells
a classic war story that would persist in films at least until Powell
and Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp – the sadness
of two pre-war friends who face each other on the battlefield when
their different countries go to war. Friedrich Faber is German; Henri
Toussaint, working in Germany and in love with Friedrich’s sister Lise,
patriotically returns to his native France on the outbreak of hostilities.
They meet on a French battlefield, where Henri is taken prisoner. He
pleads with Friedrich to be allowed to say goodbye to his parents in
their nearby home, and to send a message to Lise. Friedrich grants his
wish, and Henri is then taken off to the prison camp.
The sentimental story and the sweetness of the German soldiers
are naïve and the unnamed actor who plays Henri – cast no doubt
for his “French” good looks – emotes excessively. Still the film is
remarkable for its genuinely humane approach to its subject, and the
realistic war scenes. These seem to be constructed around actuality
footage – more likely of manoeuvres than of actual battle – as
frequent “looping” of the same shots testifies. The effect however
is impressive: the battlescapes are spectacularly panoramic and well
integrated into the action.
The director, the only identified member of the film unit, is a
particularly interesting figure. Rino Lupo was born in Rome in 1888,
and from his own account (recorded in 1923) worked in film in Italy
from 1908, was at Gaumont from 1911 to 1914, and then seems to
have passed in turn to Germany, Denmark, and Russia. Fleeing the
Russian revolution, he arrived in Warsaw, where he directed several
films and established an acting academy. In 1923 he moved to the
Invicta Company in Oporto. Here he also he established an acting
academy, where his most memorable pupil was Manoel de Oliveira –
the two men’s joint careers thus establishing an unparalleled 104-year
personal continuity of film-making. Despite the success of his eight
Portuguese feature films – five of them written by himself – after 1930
he disappeared entirely from view.
Comparing the stock unit method of production of the later Apollo
films, it is tempting to speculate whether Lupo might also have been
the director of Das Geheimschloss. Detective fiction was evidently
not alien to him: as an actor in Blanc et noir (Poland, 1919) playing
alongside Dimitri Buchowetzki, he was to create the character of
Detective Maks. – DAVID ROBINSON & ELIF RONGEN-KAYNAKÇI
Tardi / Late Thanhouser
Essi
tuttavia ci mostrano fino a qual punto Edwin Thanhouser, avendo
“attori famosi in testi famosi”: in entrambi i film l’affidabile compagnia
These two films were made in the final months of
Thanhouser’s activity: the company phased out its operations in the
late summer of 1917. They reveal however the extent to which Edwin
Thanhouser, having resumed personal supervision of production,
consolidated the outstanding qualities which had characterized his
company’s work since the beginning: sound screenplay structure,
sophisticated psychological acting, and a determined escape from
painted theatrical sets. A new characteristic, however, suggests the
influence of the “Famous Players in Famous Plays” initiative: in both of
these films the reliable Thanhouser stock company is supplemented
with shrewdly chosen luminaries from Broadway. – DAVID ROBINSON
routine: “adatto a un pubblico medio” (New York Dramatic Mirror);
Serrano recitò in molti altri film
1917, in ben 105 titoli. – DAVID ROBINSON
Thanhouser’s gifted scenarist (and brother-in-law) Lloyd F. Lonergan
conceived a present-day variation of the Dumas story: the modernity
of the resulting revenge drama is stressed in inserted documents
prominently displaying the date “1916”. Lonergan also introduces
