Salem en Halima zijn radeloos. Hun zoon en enig kind is negen maand geleden illegaal naar
Italië afgereisd en sindsdien hebben ze niets meer van of over hem gehoord. Halima kwijnt
langzaam weg door de onzekerheid. Salem start zelf een onderzoek en probeert te achterhalen
wie zijn zoon naar Europa smokkelde. Op een avond krijgen ze een dagvaarding van het
Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Het koppel bereidt zich voor om naar Tunis te gaan. Is
hun zoon gevonden? Leeft hij nog? Benzine vertelt het migratieverhaal vanuit een origineel
standpunt: zij die achterblijven.
Salem et Halima ont perdu leur enfant unique. Leur fils parti clandestinement en Italie a disparu. Neuf
mois ont passé depuis le soir de son départ, et ils sont toujours sans nouvelle de lui. Salem décide de
mener seul son enquête. Il consacre son temps à la recherche d’indices pouvant le mener à son fils et au
passeur qui l’a aidé à traverser la Méditerranée. Les informations se contredisent et n’apportent rien.
Salem est déboussolé. Un soir la police vient lui remettre une convocation du Ministère des Affaires
étrangères. Le couple se prépare à partir pour Tunis. Leur fils a-t-il été retrouvé ? Mort ? Vivant ? Ils
l’ignorent. Le film adopte un point de vue original sur l’émigration : celui de ceux qui restent.
Salem and Halima are agonized by loss. They have heard nothing from or about their only son who left
for Italy nine months earlier. The uncertainty makes Halima ill. Salem tries to find out who smuggled
his son to Europe, but his investigations yield to nothing. One evening, they receive a letter from the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The couple is preparing to go to Tunis. Has their son been found? Is he still
alive? Many films have dealt with immigration over the past two decades, but most have dealt with
it from the point of view of the immigrant or the place where the migration took place. Benzine deals
with the issue from the point of view of those who stayed behind.
