Sinds de eerste week van oktober 2014 worden burgers in en rond de stad Beni op een gruwelijke
wijze vermoord: zowel mannen, vrouwen als kinderen worden met machetes afgemaakt.
Vele anderen worden verkracht en/of ontvoerd. Vandaag, meer dan twee jaar na de start van
deze gruwel, hebben meer dan 1000 mensen het leven gelaten en blijven een honderdtal mensen
vermist. Zo’n 80.000 mensen hebben de dorpen ontvlucht en zijn de relatieve veiligheid
van de stad Beni gaan opzoeken. Het is nog steeds onduidelijk wie achter deze aanslagen zit, en
waarom de bevolking wordt opgejaagd. Beni Files is een online monument waarmee Elien en
Martijn in samenwerking met twee Congolese collega’s, Richard en Jean Baptiste, de slachtoffers
van deze aanslagen meer zichtbaarheid en waardigheid willen geven.
Depuis octobre 2014, plus de 1.000 habitants des alentours de la ville de Beni dans l’est de la RDC
(Nord Kivu) ont été assassinés dans des circonstances épouvantables. Beaucoup d’autres ont été victimes
de viol ou d’enlèvement. Une centaine de personnes sont toujours portées disparues et plus de 80.000
habitants ont dû prendre la fuite. Aujourd’hui encore, il est difficile de déterminer précisément l’auteur
de ces attaques. À ce jour, il n’y a eu ni arrestation, ni procès. Beni Files rassemble des témoignages en
ligne, comme un mémorial interactif. Elien et Martin, en collaboration avec deux collègues congolais,
Richard et Jean Baptiste, veulent donner aux victimes de ces attaques plus de visibilité et de dignité.
Since the first week of October 2014, citizens in and around the town of Beni are being murdered in a
gruesome manner: men, women and children have been hacked to death with machetes. Others have
been raped and/or abducted. Today, more than two years after the start of these atrocities, more than
1,000 people lost their lives and about a hundred people remain missing. Around 80,000 people have
fled the villages and have searched the relative safety in the town of Beni. Up until today, it is unclear
who is behind these attacks, and why the population is being hunted. Beni Files is an online monument
created by Elien and Martin, in collaboration with two Congolese colleagues, Richard and Jean Baptiste,
which aims to give the victims of these attacks visibility and dignity.
