Na haar studies in Parijs keert een jonge vrouw van aristocratische afkomst terug naar haar<br />
geboortestreek, het Sultanaat van Damagaran in Niger. In Parijs is zij verliefd geworden op<br />
een jonge man, ook uit een aristocratische familie, van het Emiraat van Maiduguri. Er zijn<br />
plannen om te trouwen, maar zijn aanzoek laat op zich wachten. Tijdens het lange wachten<br />
praat ze met haar leeftijdsgenoten over liefde, huwelijk en relaties. In deze unieke film geeft<br />
Rahmatou Keïta een frisse, rustige blik op de Sahel cultuur door de ogen van een jong meisje.<br />
Après des études à Paris, une jeune femme issue d’un milieu aristocratique rentre au pays natal, dans<br />
le sultanat de Damagaran au Niger. À Paris, elle est tombée amoureuse d’un jeune homme, également<br />
aristocratique, de l’émirat de Maïguguri. Elle se lan¬guit de son amou¬reux qui tarde à venir l’épou¬ser.<br />
Entretemps, elle discute avec des gens de son âge à propos d’amour et de mariage. Dans ce film rare et<br />
précieux, proche du conte, Rahmatou Keïta nous livre une vision fraîche et sereine des cultures du Sahel<br />

A young woman of aristocratic descent recently returned to her hometown of the Sultanate of Damagaran<br />
in Niger after completing her high education in Paris. There, she has fallen in love with a young<br />
man, also from an aristocratic family from the Emirate of Maiduguri, and plans to get married. There<br />
are no objections from her family, but as time goes on, she waits long and hard for his proposal to come,<br />
and we follow her life as she interacts with her peers, speaking to them of love, marriage, and relationships<br />
in Sahelian society. In this unique film from Niger, and a female directed film at that, Rahmatou<br />
Keïta has crafted a fresh and serene look at a different side of Africa. In The Wedding Ring, you won’t<br />
find the Western stereotypes of starving children and violence, rather, a quiet look at Sahelian culture<br />
through the eyes of a young girl.<br />
