Jonge hedendaagse dichters van Kampala delen hun persoonlijke en gemeenschappelijke ervaringen
en verwoorden ze via hun gedichten: wat betekent het om jong te zijn in Kampala? Hoe
herontdekken en hernieuwen ze de mondelinge traditie en maken ze die relevant voor hun
eigen realiteit? Hoe ervaren ze de perceptie die de rest van de wereld van hen heeft en hoe zien
zij zichzelf? Kampala, de wrede muze, is een plek die hen uitdaagt en inspireert. Alles wordt
in vraag gesteld: de geschiedenis zoals die aan hen werd onderwezen, de overheid die van hen
steelt, de kerk die de soevereiniteit heeft op een ongrijpbare droom,... Samen geven ze – in rijm –
hun mening over taboes uit hun recente geschiedenis en maken ze zich de traditie van het mondeling
doorgeven van verhalen, een traditie die de sleutel vormt tot hun identiteit, terug eigen.
De jeunes poètes contemporains de Kampala échangent leurs expériences personnelles et communes,
et les transposent dans leurs poèmes : que signifie être jeune à Kampala, comment redécouvrent-ils la
tradition orale et la réactualisent-ils dans leur propre réalité ? Comment vivent-ils la perception que le
reste du monde a d’eux et comment se voient-ils eux-mêmes ? La muse cruelle qu’est Kampala les défie et
les inspire. À leur tour, ils défient l’histoire telle qu’elle leur est enseignée, les autorités qui les spolient, les
églises qui monopolisent un rêve inaccessible. Ensemble et tout en rimes, ils se prononcent sur les tabous
de leur histoire récente et ils se réapproprient la tradition orale, la clef de leur identité.
Young contemporary poets of Kampala share their personal and communal journeys and tell these
stories through their poems: what it is like to be young in Kampala, how they rediscover the oral tradition
and make it relevant to their reality, how they deal with the perception the rest of the world has
of them and how they perceive themselves. Kampala, the cruel muse, challenges and inspires them.
In turn, they challenge the history that was taught to them as well as the government that steals from
them, and the churches that keep their sovereignty an elusive dream. Together – and in rhyme – they
speak out ‘their’ truth about taboos concerning their recent history, and they appropriate the tradition
of storytelling that is key to their identity.
