Children of Drum volgt de ontwikkelingen in de Zuid-Afrikaanse journalistiek van de jaren<br />
1950, toen het magazine Drum de strijd tegen het apartheidsregime behandelde, tot de<br />
politieke veranderingen die de journalistiek in Zuid-Afrika sindsdien hebben beïnvloed. De<br />
documentaire begint met het werk van baanbrekende onderzoeksjournalisten en -schrijvers<br />
zoals Henry Nxumalo en Can Themba, maar ook van fotografen als Peter Magubane<br />
en Jurgen Schadeberg. Het bevat persoonlijke inzichten van journalisten die met de eerste<br />
pioniers samenwerkten en van journalisten die momenteel actief zijn in de Zuid-Afrikaanse<br />
media. Ten slotte vertellen de kinderen van de toenmalige werknemers van Drum over het<br />
nalatenschap van hun vaders.<br />
Children of Drum retrace l’évolution du journalisme en Afrique du Sud depuis les années 1950, lorsque<br />
le magazine Drum rendait compte de la lutte contre le régime de l’apartheid, jusqu’aux changements<br />
politiques qui ont fortement marqué le travail journalistique dans le pays. Le documentaire commence<br />
par évoquer le travail des écrivains et journalistes d’investigation qui ont fait œuvre de pionnier comme<br />
Henry Nxumalo et Can Themba, mais aussi celui de photographes comme Peter Magubane et Jurgen<br />
Schadeberg. Suivent les vues personnelles des journalistes ayant travaillé avec les pionniers et de ceux<br />
qui sont actuellement actifs dans les médias sud-africains. Enfin, les enfants des jounalistes ayant travaillé<br />
à l’époque pour Drum nous parlent de l’héritage de leurs pères.<br />
Children of Drum traces developments in South African journalism from the 1950s when Drum magazine<br />
covered the struggle against the Apartheid regime, to the political changes since then that have<br />
affected the current state of journalism in South Africa. The documentary begins with the work of<br />
pioneering investigative journalists and writers like Henry Nxumalo and Can Themba as well as photographers<br />
like Peter Magubane and Jurgen Schadeberg. It includes personal insights by other journalists<br />
who worked with the early pioneers and continued after them. The film continues with journalists<br />
who are currently active in South African media and concludes with observations by the real children<br />
of the original Drum team on their father’s legacy.<br />
