Chanda is twaalf jaar en doet het goed op school. Samen met haar familie woont ze in een
zwarte township nabij Johannesburg, Zuid-Afrika. Wanneer Chanda’s kleine zusje sterft,
wordt haar hele gezin overhoop gehaald. Haar stiefvader bazuint rond dat de moedermelk
het meisje vergiftigd heeft. Een buurvrouw meent dat er een vloek op hun huis rust. Sommigen
fluisteren iets over ‘de ziekte’, maar niemand durft het woord ‘aids’ hardop uit te
spreken. Wanneer ook Chanda’s moeder steeds zwakker wordt, steken vreselijke roddels
de kop op. Maar de intelligente Chanda vecht terug – met al haar krachten. Want… niets is

Après la mort de sa sœur, juste après sa naissance, Chanda, 12 ans, doit faire face aux rumeurs qui se
répandent comme une traînée de poudre dans son village proche de Johannesburg. Ces rumeurs forcent
sa mère à la fuite, ruinant ainsi sa vie familiale. Chanda constate que ces rumeurs proviennent surtout
de préjugés et de superstitions. Elle décide de quitter sa maison et l’école pour rechercher sa mère et la
vérité.
