políticas para a indústria cinematográfica brasileira e o papel da censura<br />

(1964 – 1988)<br />

Abstract<br />

The 1960s were certainly one of the most troubled political times in Brazil’s<br />

recent history: the 1964 civil-military coup and the har<strong>de</strong>ning of the repression in 1968<br />

led to constant institutionalized State vigilance of the arts. Nevertheless, it was also<br />

during that period that various artistic and cultural movements managed to change the<br />

aesthetic conceptions in effect at the time. The focus of the regime had aimed at the<br />

<strong>do</strong>mestic film industry through two apparent dichotomous spheres: on one si<strong>de</strong>,<br />

supporting the production of <strong>do</strong>mestic films by granting direct and indirect benefits, and<br />

on the other, promoting the censorship of films via the DCDP (Public Entertainment<br />

Censorship Division) as well as the support of part of society. The objective of this<br />

thesis is to un<strong>de</strong>rstand how the movies financed or co-financed by Embrafilme<br />

(Brazilian Film Company) were analyzed by the DCDP. The fact that those films were<br />

financed by a governmental agency caused them to be analyzed with some complacency<br />

by the censors.
