Evaṁ me sutaṁ:<br />
Thus I have heard:<br />
ekaṁ samayaṁ Bhagavā Rājagahe viharati Gijjhakūṭe pabbate.<br />
at one time the Gracious One was dwelling near Rājagaha on the Vultures’ Peak mountain.<br />
Atha kho Cattāro Mahārājā, 1<br />
Then the Four Great Kings,<br />
mahatiyā ca yakkhasenāya, mahatiyā ca gandhabbasenāya,<br />
with a great army <strong>of</strong> yakkhas, with a great army <strong>of</strong> gandhabbas,<br />
mahatiyā ca kumbhaṇḍasenāya, mahatiyā ca nāgasenāya,<br />
with a great army <strong>of</strong> kumbhaṇḍas, with a great army <strong>of</strong> nāgas,<br />
catuddisaṁ rakkhaṁ ṭhapetvā, catuddisaṁ gumbaṁ ṭhapetvā,<br />
having set up a <strong>protection</strong> over the four quarters, having set serried troops at the four directions,<br />
catuddisaṁ ovaraṇaṁ ṭhapetvā, abhikkantāya rattiyā,<br />
having set up a barricade at the four directions, at the end <strong>of</strong> the night,<br />
abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ Gijjhakūṭaṁ obhāsetvā,<br />
having lit up the whole <strong>of</strong> Vultures’ Peak with their surpassing beauty,<br />
yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, 2 upasaṅkamitvā<br />
approached the Gracious One, and after approaching<br />
Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Te pi kho yakkhā,<br />
and worshipping the Gracious One, they sat down on one side. Then <strong>of</strong> those yakkhas,<br />
appekacce Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekam-antaṁ nisīdiṁsu.<br />
some, after worshipping the Gracious One, sat down on one side.<br />
Appekacce Bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodiṁsu,<br />
Some exchanged greetings with the Gracious One,<br />
sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sārānīyaṁ vītisāretvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdiṁsu.<br />
and after exchanging polite and courteous greetings, sat down on one side.<br />
