8. Aṅgulimālaparittaṁ<br />

The Aṅgulimāla <strong>Safeguard</strong><br />

Parittaṁ yaṁ bhaṇantassa, nisinnaṭṭhānadhovanaṁ<br />

° The water that washed the seat <strong>of</strong> the one reciting<br />

udakam-pi vināseti, sabbam-eva parissayaṁ,<br />

that safeguard destroys all dangers,<br />

“Sotthinā gabbhavuṭṭhānaṁ, yaṁ ca sādheti taṁ bhaṇe,”<br />

“Reciting it will acomplish safety for the child in the womb,”<br />

Therass' Aṅgulimālassa, Lokanāthena bhāsitaṁ.<br />

The Elder Aṅgulimāla was told by the Friend <strong>of</strong> the World.<br />

Kappaṭṭhāyimahātejaṁ, parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe:<br />

We will recite that safeguard <strong>of</strong> great power that lasts for an aeon:<br />

Yatohaṁ bhagini ariyāya jātiyā jāto<br />

Sister, since my birth in the Ariyan birth<br />

Nābhijānāmi sañcicca pāṇaṁ jīvitā voropetā,<br />

I am not aware <strong>of</strong> having intentionally taken the life <strong>of</strong> any living being,<br />

Tena saccena sotthi te hotu sotthi gabbhassā ti.<br />

By this truth, may you be be safe, and may the child in your womb be safe.<br />

9. Bojjhaṅgaparittaṁ<br />

The <strong>Safeguard</strong> about the Factors <strong>of</strong> Awakening<br />

Introductory Verses<br />

Saṁsāre saṁsarantānaṁ sabbadukkhavināsane<br />

While rolling on through the rounds <strong>of</strong> birth and death all suffering is destroyed<br />

Sattadhamme ca Bojjhaṅge Mārasenapamaddane.<br />

(by) the seven Factors <strong>of</strong> Awakening, which crush Māra’s army.<br />

Bujjhitvā ye cime sattā tibhavā muttakuttamā,<br />

Having Awakened to these seven they are supremely released from the three worlds,<br />

Ajātim-ajarābyādhim amataṁ nibbhayaṁ gatā.<br />

and have gone to (that state where there is) no birth, no ageing, no sickness, no death and which<br />

is free from fear.<br />

Evam-ādiguṇūpetaṁ anekaguṇasaṅgahaṁ<br />

Being endowed with this quality and a collection <strong>of</strong> countless other qualities<br />

Osadhañ-ca imaṁ mantaṁ: Bojjhaṅgañ-ca bhaṇāmahe.<br />

it is a medicinal mantra: we will recite those factors <strong>of</strong> Awakening.
