17. Mahākassapattherabojjhaṅgaṁ 1<br />

The Factor <strong>of</strong> Awakening Concerning the Elder Mahā Kassapa<br />

Introductory Verse<br />

Yaṁ Mahākassapatthero, parittaṁ Munisantikā 2<br />

° The elder Mahā Kassapa, having heard that safeguard<br />

sutvā tasmiṁ khaṇe yeva ahosi nirupaddavo.<br />

from the Sage, at that moment became free from adversity.<br />

Bojjhaṅgabalasaṁyuttaṁ, parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe.<br />

It is about the strength <strong>of</strong> the factors <strong>of</strong> Awakening, we will recite that safeguard.<br />

Evaṁ me sutaṁ:<br />

Thus I have heard:<br />

The <strong>Safeguard</strong><br />

ekaṁ samayaṁ Bhagavā Rājagahe viharati<br />

at one time the Gracious One was dwelling near Rājagaha<br />

Veḷuvane Kalandakanivāpe.<br />

at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place in Bamboo Wood.<br />

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā Mahākassapo<br />

Then at that time venerable Mahā Kassapa<br />

Pipphalīguhāyaṁ 3 viharati, ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno.<br />

was dwelling at the Pepper Cave, and was afflicted, suffering, and very sick.<br />

Atha kho Bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ patisallānā vuṭṭhito,<br />

Then the Gracious One, rising from seclusion in the evening time,<br />

yenāyasmā Mahākassapo tenupasaṅkami,<br />

approached venerable Mahā Kassapa,<br />

upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.<br />

and after approaching he sat down on the prepared seat.<br />

Nisajja kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṁ Mahākassapaṁ etad-avoca:<br />

Having sat down the Gracious One said this to venerable Mahā Kassapa:<br />

“Kacci te Kassapa khamanīyaṁ? Kacci yāpanīyaṁ?<br />

“Can you bear up, Kassapa? Can you carry on?<br />
