Hvide Sande<br />

The fishing town of Hvide Sande lies between the North<br />

Sea on one side and <strong>Ringkøbing</strong> <strong>Fjord</strong> on the other, in the<br />

middle of a long sandy isthmus – right on the fifty-sixth<br />

parallel, which frames the approach between Søndervig<br />

to the north and Nymindegab to the south. The town<br />

is “new”, having grown up around the floodgates which<br />

were built in 1931 – and it has always been influenced<br />

by water, with the fishing industry, leisure activities and as<br />

a destination for the many visitors. The harbour is the fifth<br />

biggest fishing harbour in Denmark, and the fish auction<br />

building occupies a prominent position at the harbour,<br />

where the fishermen deliver their catches, which are<br />

now sold via the internet, but auctions are arranged<br />

in summer for all who are interested, where the<br />

intense atmosphere can be experienced when<br />

the auctioneer starts the sale, and where fresh<br />

fish can be bought straight from the sea just<br />

outside the building.<br />

Many other businesses have also sprung<br />

up around the harbour as the fishery<br />

came to experience more difficult conditions,<br />

and was therefore no longer<br />

so dominant: several shipyards with<br />

specific specialties such as repairs to<br />

wooden boats, construction of ferries,<br />

control boats for the offshore<br />

wind turbine parks, and many other<br />

high-technology machinery industries<br />

for the maritime world, and<br />

smoke houses/restaurants which<br />

serve all kinds of fish courses.<br />
