The area around the fjord and close to the North Sea
where no trees block the light has always attracted creative
people, so arts and crafts are thriving in this area. Old and
new artworks are found in many sites, in roundabouts, in
the middle of the landscape or in the towns. The famous
poet and artist Piet Hein once had a studio in Skjern, and
two of his works, “The EGG” and “The Kiss” have been
erected, each on its own roundabout on the ring road
around the town, while in Ringkøbing, the local artist
Henrik Have is responsible for the imposing concrete cube
“Ezekiel’s Stool” or “The Cube”.
Jens Galschiøt’s “Survival of the Fattest” or “The Fat Lady”
stands at the harbour in Ringkøbing, but it was made for
the European social summit in Athens in 2006. Following
that it came to Ringkøbing as part of a collection of works
by the same artist for a temporary exhibition, but this one
work was bought and erected at the harbour. In front of
the museum is a statue of Mylius Erichsen, leader of the
Danish expeditions to North East Greenland in the period
1906-08.
In Hvide Sande, “Cyklus” by the local painter and sculptor
48
Leo Andersen dominates the north end of the drainage
sluice, while “Vestled” by the painter Marianne Hesselbjerg,
architect Carsten Juel-Christiansen and landscape architect
Torben Schønherr forms a connecting link between land
and sea at the south beach. The main element is a large
tiled surface placed like a saddle on the dune. The tiles are
made like the bricks used to build the old dune farms, but
using a new technology.
Søndervig is host to the kind of art which is renewed every
year, i.e. the large sand sculptures which are constructed in
June every year and last to October, to the admiration and
fascination of many visitors.
Memorials and statues are found everywhere in the area,
and many of our churches have interesting ornamentation
and art pieces both very old and very new.
West Jutland’s Art Pavilion
This new 400 m2 art pavilion was opened in 2012 in
Videbæk. Attractively situated at the west end of the park
and with a lovely view of the lake, it stands like a Japanese
tea house with its walkway suspended above the water,
which is reflected in the ceiling. Videbæk was architect
Henning Larsen’s home town and an exhibition on him
and his work is on view in the pavilion together with that
of another of the town’s famous men, the sculptor Jens
Lund. Looked at from the outside, it’s clear that Videbæk’s
symbol, the big V by Per Arnoldi in the roundabout east of
the town, was part of the inspiration for the design.
Crafts
Almost every town has a an art or craft studio, and art
galleries and art and craft shops are found in many places.
Potters, jewellers, painters, glassblowers and wood turners
are some of the artists to have settled in the area. There
are both permanent and changing exhibitions open most
of the year.
Special Exhibitions
Opening in Hvide Sande and finishing in Herning, “The
Wave” – a major cultural festival – will run in the period 17
August – 19 October 2013. Numerous varied events will
open everywhere about waves of every variety, from waves
of music to waves of danger,
to life under the waves and
waves of storytelling and
much else.
