The Houvig fortifications
A little north of the town are the Houvig fortifications,
which were a part of the most important German fortification
system during the Second World War. The Houvig fortifications
were a part of the Atlantic wall, which stretched
from Spain to Norway. Guided tours to the bunkers are
arranged throughout the summer.
Bicycle paths
The bicycle path between Søndervig and Ringkøbing is a
story in itself. It was the first such path in Denmark and it
was independent of the course of the road. It was partly
financed by a toll levied on cyclists travelling to Søndervig
and return, but the path system is now both free and more
extensive – the West Coast Path runs along the bases of
the dunes, past Lyngvig lighthouse and south over Stadil
Island with its bird areas, north and with sealed paths along
the routes to both Ringkøbing and Hvide Sande.
The historic monuments are mixed with the modern
seaside town’s fast tempo and high level of activity – all
together in the sublime natural environment with the
delightful swimming beaches, high dunes, and a landscape
which is suitable for both hiking and cycling. There’s something
for both young and old here, for the active and those
who simply want to relax.
