13l Katame no Kata

Katame no Kata, the second of the Randori no Kata, is made up of three

sets of techniques: osae-komi-waza, shime-weiza and kansetsu-w aza. The

five representative techniques in each set are given in Table II on p. 145.

To begin the kata, you, the tori, and your partner, the nage, stand facing

each other at a distance of about 5.5 meters. (FiS. I) You should be on the

right as seen from the joseki. Turn together toward the joseki and do a

standing bow, then face each other and perform a sitting bow. (Figs. 2-4)

Stand and step forward with your left foot into shizentai. (Fig.5) Withdraw

your left foot and kneel on your left knee, instep off the mat. Angle

your right knee toward the right front corner, and place your right hand on

it. Your left hand should hang naturally. This is called l<yoshi, the high

kneeling posture. (FiS. A

Your partner shifts his right foot inward, then advances his right foot and

brings his left knee up behind him. He moves his right knee outward again

to resume the high kneeling posture. (Fis. D This method of moving on one

knee is called shikko.
