were found the type specimens of Yen tv r i's species : U. viridis,
U cochleata and U anceps, about which since their publication
there had existed a certain amount of ambiguity. This had
been due to two factors. The first of these was that the
descriptions of the species, although made at some length, did
not suggest
much as to their distinction. The second was that
presumably Venturi had no definite conception of the species
described, and that there are many incongruities
and contra-
dictions in his determinations of other Ulota specimens in
Weymouth's collection. The specimens referred to above as
types must be regarded as such because they
bear the numbers
indicated by Venturi in the descriptions of the species. They
also correspond well in their characters to the respective descrip-
tions. Through the kindness of Mr. H. N. Dix on of North-
ampton among other material of Ulota I could examine some
types of R. Brown's (ter.) Orthotricha referred by H. N. Dixon
in his
Studies in the
„
Bryology of New Zealand" to Ulota.
Mr. G. O. K. S a i n sb v r y of Wairoa was kind enough to
send me some fresh material of Ulota from the North Island of
New Zealand, and the Director of the Royal Botanic
Gardens at Kew has provided me with copies
pages of some works dealing
of the relevant
with mosses of the Australasian
region. Sincere appreciation is expressed to all the above
mentioned institutions and persons.
