Calyptra thickly papillose. Peristome double, inserted<br />
below the mouth; teeth 8, narrowly acuminated, finely<br />
papillose, with transverse bars at the inner side, afterwards<br />
splitting; processes 8, lineal-lanceolate, hyaline, smooth. Spores<br />

New Zealand: North Island, Hawkes Bay, on bark of small trees<br />
near Lake Waikaremoana, ca 2300', 28. XII 1932 (Sainsbury); Mungatui, I 1888<br />
(Bell) in Herb. Broth.; Mauriceville, on willow, 111 1910 (Gray) Herb. Dixon.<br />
U. breviseta very much resembles the broad-leaved U. lutea<br />
from the South Island of N. Z. differing from it in the broad band<br />
of hyaline cells at the margins of the leaf base, in the margins al-<br />
most plane and in the smaller cells. The seta is rather short when<br />
Hawkes<br />
