I have not seen any calyptra in the material examined, but
Venturi mentions the calyptra as being densely hairy (den-
se pilosa). Although the leaf base of U. cochleata is generally

broader and more concave than that of U. laticiliata, the leaf
forms of both species are on the whole very much alike and it
is almost impossible to distinguish them only by
their leaves.
As to the distinction of U. lutea and U. cochleata the deciding
factors are both the position of the stomata and the different
