to be a subspecies but afterwards I met plants
separation of adpressa from the typical
Literature.
which made the
viridis more difficult. The
variation in the length of the leaf and especially in the extent
of the acumination of the leaf point is considerable even within
the limits of adpressa. As to the relation of U. anceps to
U. viridis I have examined the type of U. anceps in Weymouth's
collection (Herb. Brotherus). Although the plant differs remarkably
from the typical U. viridis in its robust habit, I could not de-
tect any palpable characters by which anceps could be separat-
ed from viridis, and I think that if. anceps is only a robust
form of if. viridis.
I have examined R. Brown's Orthotrichum parvulum in
H. N. Dixon's herbarium and I am convinced that this plant
belongs to U. viridis. Possibly it is the var. adpressa
but the
material is too scanty to allow of a definite judgment. if. viridis
belongs to a distinct group of species which embraces if. Reh-
mannii from the mountains of Central Europe, if. megalospora
from Washington and British Columbia and U. magellanica and
if. ventricosa from Southern Chile and Fuegia. U. reptans Mitt,
from Japan may also belong to this group but the material
available is so scanty that I could not come to a definite deci-
sion. All species of this group show a creeping stem, small
leaves, small capsules and a yellow-bordered lid.
