designation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se creatures? These pests are legion,<br />

and what with our own creep<strong>in</strong>g pace <strong>of</strong> travel by day,<br />

coupled with <strong>the</strong>se o<strong>the</strong>r creep<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs by night, I<br />

dreamed two nights <strong>in</strong> succession a curious jumble <strong>of</strong><br />

a dream—a vision this <strong>of</strong> a large roomy railway station<br />

placarded all over with monster advertisements, *' Keat<strong>in</strong>g's<br />

Powder." The railway, one op<strong>in</strong>es, stood for a rebuke to<br />

our caravan's creep<strong>in</strong>g pace, and "Keat<strong>in</strong>g's" was—well,<br />

for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r creepers.<br />

But " he jests at scars who never felt a wound," and I<br />

leaves rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, under which we crouch for shelter.<br />

Down pours that ruthless ra<strong>in</strong>, until <strong>the</strong> most promis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> fires soon goes clean out,—first red, <strong>the</strong>n yellow, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

<strong>the</strong> bleak little blue flames, your firewood f<strong>in</strong>ally ceas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to smoke. What next ?—muse on your miseries ? Why, <strong>of</strong><br />

course, s<strong>in</strong>g :<br />

"It a<strong>in</strong>'t no use to grumble or compla<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Tis just as cheap and easy to rejoice;<br />

When God sorts out <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r and sends ra<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Why ! ra<strong>in</strong>'s my choice."<br />

However, even an African cannot s<strong>in</strong>g for eight hours,
